"Do you use templates?" is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is that the word covers three completely different things. Knowing which one you are buying matters more than the price.
Option 1: a template you fill in yourself
A template is an empty layout. You buy or download it, then supply everything that makes a website work: the words, the photographs, the page structure, the titles and descriptions that search engines read, the speed, the mobile testing. The builder or theme company sells software; the website is your project.
What you get: the lowest upfront price, full control of your evenings, and a site that exists.
What you give up:
- Time. A first website on a builder is a forty-hour project for most owners, spread over two months.
- Findability. Templates ship with no SEO work done. Titles say "Home", images have no descriptions, and there is no structured data telling Google what your business is.
- Distinctiveness. The popular templates are used by thousands of businesses, and the customers notice.
- Performance. Multipurpose themes carry code for every feature they might ever offer, which is why they are slow.
- Ownership, sometimes. Many builders keep the site on their platform. Leave, and you start again.
A template is the right buy when you have no budget and plenty of time, and when the site is not expected to bring customers on its own.
Option 2: a ready-made site rebuilt around you
This is the option most people have not seen before, so it needs defining. We built twenty-three complete websites, one for each common trade: dentist, plumber, law firm, florist, gym, pizzeria, insurance agency and so on. They are real, live websites with between five and sixty-five pages each, every page written, structured and optimized for that trade. You open one, click through it, and if the design suits you we rebuild it around your business for a flat $500, or $890 for the ones with a working booking application.
What changes: your business name, logo, colours and typography; every page rewritten for your services, prices and photographs; the local SEO retargeted to your town; your domain registered; the site launched on hosting that is included for a year.
What stays: the page structure and the design system. That structure is the valuable part. It was built around how customers in that trade actually decide, and it already carries the technical SEO a template never has.
Why it is not a template: a template is a starting point and the work is yours. A ready-made site is a finished result and the work is ours. It is built by the same people who do our custom work, it launches in about a week, and you own everything.
The limit is honest too: the structure is fixed. Pages can come out and extra pages can be added, but if your business needs something nobody in your trade has, custom is the better route.
Option 3: custom design from a blank page
Custom design starts with your business, your customers and your goals, and only then becomes a sitemap, a visual direction and pages. Nothing is inherited, which is exactly why it costs more and takes longer.
It earns its price when:
- The brand is the product. A design studio, a boutique consultancy, a hospitality brand that sells atmosphere.
- Your service does not fit an existing shape. Unusual flows, many page types, several audiences with different needs.
- You need integrations. A booking engine with your own rules, a kitchen system, a client portal.
- You are in a market where looking like anyone else is a problem.
Market prices for custom work run from a few thousand dollars with a good freelancer to $5,000 to $15,000 at an agency for a small-business site, according to Levitate's 2026 cost report. Our custom packages are $490 for a landing page, $890 for a company website and $1,490 for a WooCommerce store at launch pricing, with hosting and SEO included, for the reasons explained in our article on website costs.
The decision guide
| Your situation | The sensible buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A common local trade with common customer questions | Ready-made site | The structure is proven, the pages are written, and it launches in a week for $500. |
| One service, one campaign, one thing to sell | Custom landing page | A single page built to convert one audience beats a seven-page site nobody asked for. |
| The brand carries the business | Custom company website | Design from a blank page is the only way to look like nobody else. |
| You sell products | Custom WooCommerce store, or a managed platform | Stores are structure, payments and product data. Read the comparison before choosing. |
| No budget, plenty of time, no expectation of leads | Template | It exists, and that is sometimes enough. Plan the real site for when the business can pay for it. |
Three questions to ask whoever you buy from
- What is finished, and what do I still have to do? The answer separates a template from a website.
- Who owns the site, the design and the domain when I have paid? It should be you, in writing.
- Which SEO work is done before launch? Titles, descriptions, structured data, sitemap, Search Console. If the answer is vague, so is the website.
If you want the short version: for most local businesses a ready-made site is the best value on this page. If your business does not fit one of the twenty-three, tell us what you do and we will say honestly whether a custom build is worth it.
Questions people ask
Frequently asked
Is a ready-made website just a template with a different name?
No. A template is an empty layout you fill in. A ready-made site is a finished website, with every page written, structured and optimized for a trade, that we rebuild around your business: your name, branding, photographs, services, prices and town. You receive a complete site, not a starting point, and you own it outright.
Will my ready-made site look the same as another business's?
Two businesses starting from the same design do not end up looking alike. Your logo, colours, typography, photographs and copy change the whole feel, and pages you do not need come out. The structure that helps the site rank stays the same, which is the point.
When is custom design worth the extra money?
When the brand itself is the product, when your service does not fit an existing structure, or when you need page types and flows nobody has built before. For a common local trade with common customer questions, a ready-made site usually gets you further for less.
Can I start with a template and upgrade later?
You can, but budget for a rebuild rather than an upgrade. Template sites rarely carry over cleanly: the URLs, the content structure and the SEO signals usually have to be redone. If you can afford a finished site now, it is cheaper than a template now and a proper site in a year.
