Moving company website design with a move planner that shows its working

Forty-seven pages for a local mover in Queens, and a move planner that answers the first question every caller has. A visitor says what is moving, the floors and the elevator at each end, the walk to the truck, the packing, the furniture that comes apart and the piano, and gets a crew, a truck and a range of hours at the published hourly rate, both ends printed the same size. It is called a planning range, because in New York an estimate is a document a mover writes after seeing the goods. Sending it is an enquiry with a preferred date: it lands in an inbox, and nothing is booked until the survey.

  • 8 service pages, from walk-ups to pianos, each with its rate
  • 6 journal articles on cost, walk-ups, a COI, boxes, kitchens and the curb
  • 11 pages on what a mover should not claim

Demonstration site. Woodside Wrenfield Movers, LLC is a fictional business invented for this demo — every phone number on it is literally 000-000-0000. The website itself is entirely real and built exactly as yours would be.

Why this design works for a local moving company

Built for how your customers actually decide

People ask a mover one thing first: what will it cost. Most moving sites answer with a quote form and a promise. This design answers with the working. The move planner asks what a surveyor would ask, in the order a surveyor walks a home, and prints a crew, a truck and a range of hours, then multiplies the hours by the published hourly rate. Travel time is its own line, the time is counted in quarter hours, and a fourth-floor walk-up takes a third mover. Every figure comes from one set of rules, which the browser and the server both read, so the range on the screen and the range in the inbox are the same.

The law shaped the planner. In New York a household mover's estimate is a written document made after the goods are seen, and on an hourly move the customer can be held to the estimate plus a quarter of it at delivery. So the planner never calls its answer an estimate: it is a planning range, both ends printed the same size, and it says so on every screen. New York also forbids a mover any discount at all, so there is no coupon or price match. A real mover prints its State certificate number in every advertisement; this fictional one holds none, and the footer says so on every page.

And it explains what the trade usually leaves vague. Valuation is not insurance: the page says what thirty cents a pound pays for a television, and points the customer to their own insurance agent. Hoisting a sofa through a window needs a licensed rigger in New York City. No mover can reserve the curb, and a parking ticket is never the customer's to pay. Eleven pages quote what moving sites commonly advertise and answer each claim with the rule and its source.

  • A range with the working shown

Two movers and a truck at $150 an hour, three at $205, four at $260, the same every day. The planner prints the hours as a range, adds the travel time to and from the job, and multiplies. Both ends of every range are the same size, because either can happen, and nothing is called an estimate.

  • Valuation, explained, never sold

What a mover pays if something breaks is valuation: thirty cents a pound per article if the customer writes it in, or a declared value. The site says what that means for a ten-pound television, and that this company sells no insurance. New York forbids a mover to advertise that loads are insured.

  • Stairs are time, not fees

No fee per flight, no long-carry fee, no fuel surcharge. A walk-up takes longer and the planner adds the time; from the fourth floor up the crew grows by one. Every charge the company has is listed on one page, as New York asks a mover to disclose them.

  • The enquiry asks for nothing it doesn't need

Name, e-mail, telephone, two ZIP codes, a date and how to survey. The server recomputes the range from the answers rather than trusting the browser, every enquiry is a new record, and the reply says nothing about any other one. Enquiries are deleted 180 days after the preferred date.

Mobile first, not mobile afterthought

Most of your visitors will see this version

Local service searches are overwhelmingly done on phones, so the phone layout is the one we design first and test hardest. Text stays readable without zooming, the phone number stays reachable with a thumb, and nothing needs a horizontal scroll.

Every page, listed

What is actually on the site

47 indexable pages, each with its own title, description, structured data and a place in the sitemap. That is 47 chances to appear in a search instead of one.

Eight service pages

  • Local moves, apartment moves and walk-ups, office moves
  • Packing, boxes and packing supplies, pianos and heavy pieces, taking furniture apart
  • When the dates don't line up: moving into storage, and why this mover stores nothing
  • Each with its hourly rates at both ends, or why it is priced after a survey

The move planner

  • Thirteen questions over seven steps: the home, the stairs or elevator at each end, the walk to the truck, the packing, the furniture, the piano
  • A crew, a truck and a range of hours, multiplied by the published rate, with the travel time as its own line
  • Reassembly on its own line with its sales tax, at the rate where the furniture is put back
  • It stops and says why for a move out of state, an office, or a move with no Queens end
  • Resumable from a link, and works without JavaScript as a plain form

An enquiry, not a booking

  • A preferred date, how flexible it is, and a video or in-home survey
  • No message box: the planner's answers say what a free-text box would
  • The enquiry lands in a small staff inbox, with a status and a survey time
  • Three business days to cancel after a survey at home, built into the earliest date

Eleven pages on what a mover should not claim

  • 'Fully licensed and insured', 'Instant binding quote', '10% off for seniors', 'No hidden fees'
  • 'We hoist it through the window', 'We move anywhere', 'Free month of storage', 'We handle the parking', 'Damage-free, guaranteed', 'Best movers in Queens'
  • Each is quoted as moving sites advertise it, and answered with the law and a source

A journal of plain answers

  • How a local move is charged in New York, planning a walk-up move, a building's certificate of insurance, how many boxes, packing a kitchen, and the truck and the curb

What $500 covers

Yours, not a copy of the demo

You get the same structure and design system with your business in it — your name, logo, colours, photographs, services, prices and locations, and every page rewritten for you. Two businesses starting from this design do not end up looking like each other.

Pages you do not need come out. Pages you need that are not there can be added at $90 each. The local SEO — titles, descriptions, structured data and the copy itself — is retargeted from Woodside to wherever you actually work.

Who this suits

A good fit if you run one of these

  • Local moving companies charging by the hour
  • Movers in walk-up neighborhoods where stairs decide the day
  • Companies that survey every move by video or at home before booking
  • Movers who want enquiries that already say what is moving
  • Owners tired of 'free quote' forms that arrive as a name and a phone number

Not quite your trade? Designs adapt more easily than people expect — the structure matters far more than the industry it was written for. Tell us what you do and we will say honestly whether this one fits.

Questions

About this design

Can the planner give a fixed price?

It shouldn't, in New York. A fixed total is a written binding estimate, made after the mover has examined the goods. The planner prints a range at your published rates and calls it a planning range; the survey and the written estimate come after it.

Can our certificate number go on the site?

Yes, and in New York it has to: a household mover prints its State certificate number and address in every advertisement. This demonstration is a fictional company, so it prints none and says why on every page. Yours goes in the footer.

We do interstate moves too.

Then the site carries your U.S. DOT number and the federal brochure link, and the planner gains a long-distance branch. This demonstration moves within New York only, because a fictional company cannot hold federal authority, and it explains the difference.

We charge flat rates, not hourly.

The planner's arithmetic is rules in one file: crew, truck and hours today, but it can as easily price by weight or by the room. What it keeps either way is printing both ends of a range and the reason for each figure.

Are the pictures of a real company?

No. Every picture on this demonstration was generated and says so on the picture. No truck is shown from the side, because a real one carries a name and a number there, and no box carries a print. Your own photographs replace them.
